
Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico, October 15, 2022.- The “Siglo XXI” Convention Center hosted the opening ceremony of the II FISU AMÉRICA GAMES 2022, a competition that takes place in the city of Mérida on October 14 to October 26 with the presence of more than a thousand members from the 12 participating countries.
Leonz Eder, President of FISU International; Alim Maluf Neto, President of FISU America; Dr. Manuel Merodio, Secretary General of the National Council for Sports in Education (CONDDE), Dr. José de Jesús Williams, Rector of the Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán (UADY); Lic. Carlos Sáenz Castillo, General Director of the Yucatan Sports Institute (IDEY), and Lic. Héctor García Antonio, Technical Coordinator of Physical Culture and Sports of the IMSS, welcomed the delegations.
Delegations from Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Peru, Trinidad and Tobago, the United States, Uruguay and Mexico paraded with their athletes, officials and commissioners.
Once the Honors to the Flag were carried out by the Escuela Preparatoria Uno UADY, Mr. Carlos Sáenz Castillo, General Director of the Yucatan State Sports Institute (IDEY), on behalf of Governor Mauricio Vila Dosal, gave the words of welcome.
“There is no deadline that is not met, in 2019 we announced that Mérida would host these games thanks to the authorities and that we are a culturally sports society. We are very happy that finally, after the pandemic, these games have been held in its 2nd edition, of having more than a thousand athletes and more than 1,500 attendees in our state, to whom we ask to let themselves be pampered by the warmth of the Yucatecans.” – mentioned the head of the sport in our state.
Immediately afterwards, Dr. José de Jesús Williams, rector of UADY, gave his message to all those present.
“We are honoured that UADY is considered to host these games. Now not only does sport give us health, but as in our lives, it is earned and lost by directly influencing all areas, so enjoy your sport and proudly represent your country.”
He touched the turn of the CONDDE, in the voice of its Secretary General, Dr. Manuel Merodio Reza.
“It is a pleasure for CONDDE to host these games, I thank all those involved who made this event possible that was done with great effort. You young people are the essential and for what we work, to be able to compete after your discipline and constant preparation.” – Merodio shared, who ended with a “live” for COND, Yucatan and FISU.
The President of FISU International, Leonz Eder, also expressed a few words.
“Welcome and welcome to the FISU AMERICA GAMES, you athletes are the future of tomorrow, leaders of the next generations having good communication in all parts of the world. I wish you a lot of health and sport for everyone.”
Finally, Alim Maluf Neto, President of FISU America made the inaugural declaration of the event, not without first wishing luck to all the competitors.
“On behalf of FISU America we welcome you and thank you for being part of this magnificent competition. These games are made of you for you, so good luck and success in your skills.”
The athletes’ oath was in charge of Magdalena Matú Carballo, an university athlete in the discipline of chess.
The LEF. David Carrillo, together with the LEF. Ileana Paredes were in charge of the oath of judges.
During the ceremony, two shows were presented showing the Mayan culture, which included a ritual and a dance demonstration.
The first edition of this event was held in Brazil, in 2018. Now it is presented in Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico, with the opportunity to witness a highly competitive event, where nationals and visitors can enjoy the wonders that our city and State offers.
